Spring Lawn Care Tips: Efficient Watering, Lawn Maintenance, and Fertilization

Spring has arrived early this year, and it’s the perfect time to get your sprinkler system up and running. At Green ER Lawns & Trees, we want to make sure your lawn is in the best shape possible this season. Here are some helpful tips and recommendations for March that will keep your lawn looking great:

1. Get Your Sprinkler System Ready

With spring arriving early, now is the perfect time to get your sprinkler system back in action. We recommend scheduling watering for three days a week and avoiding watering on your mowing day. Instead, schedule the watering for the day after mowing.

Watering Durations:

✅ For lawns with pop-up heads: 5 minutes
✅ For flower beds with pop-up heads: 3 minutes
✅ For lawns with rotor heads: 10 minutes

2. Best Time to Water

We recommend watering at 5 AM and again at 6 AM. Due to the clay soil in Katy, water doesn’t filter easily and takes time to be absorbed. Watering twice allows for more efficient water use. The first watering at 5 AM soaks the soil, and the second watering at 6 AM helps the water penetrate deeper into the ground.

3. Prune, Trim, and Mulch Your Flower Beds and Trees

March is the ideal time to prune and trim your trees and shrubs, as well as perform general spring cleanup around your yard. Don’t forget to add fresh mulch to your flower beds and around trees. Mulching helps retain moisture, keeps weeds in check, and gives your garden a fresh look.

4. Lawn Scalping: Promote Fresh Growth

Scalping is the process of mowing your lawn short to remove dry, brown grass and encourage new growth. For Bermuda and Zoysia grass, we recommend mowing very short, around 1 inch. For St. Augustine grass, mow to a height of about 2 inches or gently rake the lawn to remove dead grass.

5. Fertilization and Humic Acid Treatment

This month, your lawn will receive a round of liquid fertilization to promote growth, as well as a humic acid treatment to nourish beneficial microorganisms in the soil. This helps create healthier soil, which supports a stronger and greener lawn. You’ll receive a notification when your service is scheduled.
